The Chicago Blackhawks are only one win away from capturing their second Stanley Cup in four years. But the Boston Bruins have been in this position before — only two seasons ago, in fact. This and more in the top NHL stories from Saturday:
1. Patrick Kane stepped up for Chicago on Saturday, scoring his eighth and ninth goals of the post-season to give his team all the offence it would need to win Game 5. David Bolland added an insurance marker into an empty net. The Hawks now go to Boston on Monday (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 7:30 p.m. ET) with a chance to clinch the Cup. But it was only two years ago that the Bruins were in an identical situation, having lost Game 5 of the Cup final on the road to fall behind the Canucks. Boston bounced back to win Game 6 at home, and then took the Cup in Game 7 in Vancouver. Can the Bruins do it again?
2. Both teams might be without key players in Game 6. Bruins centre Patrice Bergeron left the game and was taken by ambulance to a hospital after suffering an unknown injury. Meanwhile, Hawks captain Jonathan Toews spent the third period on the bench after getting clobbered by Boston's Johnny Boychuk. CBCSports.ca senior hockey writer Tim Wharnsby says the uncertainty regarding the status of the two stars will dominate the Stanley Cup storyline over the next two days.
3. It appears that John Tortorella will replace the man who replaced him. Tortorella may soon be hired to coach the Vancouver Canucks, who recently fired Alain Vigneault, the man who was tapped on Friday to take Tortorella's place behind the New York Rangers' bench. As strange as this all may seem, the Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove panel says this could be a good move for the Canucks.
4. The devastating flooding in southern Alberta has hit the Saddledome in Calgary pretty hard. The building was inundated by millions of gallons of water that measured at least four metres in depth, reaching the eighth row of seats in the arena bowl and completely submerging the Flames' dressing room. Team president Ken King said many affected parts of the Saddledome are "a total loss," including the ice plants as well as the electronics that run the Jumbotron. But King vowed that repairs will be done in time for the Flames to open the next NHL season in October.
